The NZ bush falcon Falco novaeseelandiae is the only extant native hawk or eagle. It is actually smaller than the more common indigenous harrier hawk. The falcon is not a common species. It is alleged to be th fastest falcon in the world.
The male is smaller and more agile than the female. Unlike the harrier hawk, it does not eat carrion (or road kill) and survives on live prey.
