The adult males are much larger than the females. This species can also dive deeper than any other seal. The scientific name is Arctocephalus forsteri.
These photos were taken around Cape Palliser. Fur seals were harvested in the 1800s and extirpated from many areas around New Zealand. Numbers are recovering quickly however, and their return to parts of the coast-line of NZ is welcomed by most.
