Pied Herons are a relatively common species in Australia. Their range includes Indonesia, Papua new Guinea and Timor-Leste.

Their scientific name is Ardea picata. They are currently rated by the IUCN as least concern in terms of conservation risk.

The population of these birds is believed to be stable. They can in suitable habitats become very abundant. As is common to Ardeids (herons and egrets) their preferred habitat is wetlands and the like.
