Breaking the Rules

Photography composition often used a number of rules or guidelines to improve a composition.  These include the placement of elements (via the rule of thirds) or the use of leading lines, or foreground interest to give the feeling of depth.  
 
Sometimes it's fun to try to break these rules and see what happens.  This is a long exposure shot (30 seconds) taken down at Waiake after sunset.  The shot is towards Rangitoto Island and the exposed rocks  create some depth to the photo.  There's still enough light to pick up details in the scene and the water is calm and still enough to create a simplistic composition.

I have a Nex camera that lets me do panoramas on the fly, but it's still easier to do it at home with photoshop on the PC. The rule-of-thirds isn't something that should be slavishly followed, but I'm still n two minds about the wisdom of dropping a 'foreground' interest.

I can understand the motive to want to get a FF camera if you want to get into landscapes. I find my Dynax 7 (film camera) still in some ways, better than the APS-C DSLR I use. On the other hand, the APS-C format is still more travel friendly and the crop-factor helps with the telephoto work with wildlife.

Yes, applying the one third here probably would make the sky or sea awkward.
I have to use strictly the 16:9 format so that stills can go into a standard 16:9 film frame.
I like to see three subjects of interest if possible. As here Sea, Sky, Land.
I can do panorama on my little camera, but at its most extreme the shot is too narrow.
The 16:9 format is in fact 3:2 cut back, with a slice off top and bottom.

I want to steal someone's full frame camera soon
