NZ Parrots

New Zealand is home to three native parrot species. These are the critically endangered kakapo, kaka and kea. Consequentially opportunities to photograph these birds are rare.

Biological evidence gives the parrots a Gondwanaland origin, but the separation of New Zealand from the rest of Gondwanaland preceded the evolution of this family. This means our native parrot fauna is the rare product of later colonisations from Australia.
